Poetry and Pragmatism
Studio Project - Public Library (mid-review rendering)
Benjamin is a graduate student of architecture at NC State University in his third year. From his extensive background in deep-sea shipping and transportation, Benjamin sees architecture as the chance to build spaces that are pragmatic as much as they are poetic.
Before architecture school, Benjamin spent nine years training and working as a deck officer on US merchant ships. His experience ranged from managing military supply vessels to being a senior officer of petrochemical tankers between four continents and three oceans. He became acutely aware on ships of the design elements used in the built environment ashore - from light, sound and space to movement and utility. After seeing many parts of the world and its people, he feels that all architecture should respond to and enhance people's sense of place.

As a new designer in the ABC industry, Benjamin searches for opportunities to engage with both its history and its future. His first priority is always good graphic communication, and the ability to efficiently show an idea to others. His designs focus on site study, user experiences, collaboration, sustainability, and building technology.
